What is IGC 2011
India Giving
Challenge (IGC) is an online
event held by GiveIndia as a part of
the Joy of Giving Week 2011 when India celebrates its culture of giving. This event is to
encourage NGOs and companies to raise funds online and get rewarded for their
efforts in turn.
How so? Through a matching grant that is given, for fundraising in
different categories, to winning NGOs, during the course of the event.
Last year, 100+ NGOs raised over Rs. 2 crores from 9,000+
donors. This effort became even more rewarding with a matching grant of Rs65
lacs from GiveIndia. This year, not only are there more prizes but
the matching grant on offer is also bigger.
What is GuideStar India's role
As the NGO
Outreach & Registration Partner for the India Giving Challenge 2011, GuideStar
India creates awareness about IGC among NGOs and helps NGOs complete the necessary process required to get
registered with GiveIndia, specifically for IGC 2011. We carry out due diligence of NGOs as per criteria set by GiveIndia.
All NGOs featured on GuideStar India need to upload only additional documents and complete the processes unique to IGC 2011. NGOs that apply for IGC 2011 get automatically featured on GuideStar India, on submission of the basic information required for GuideStar India registration.
What you
need to do before you apply for IGC 2011
Verify
that the objects clause of your trust deed/ MoA includes: education and/or medical relief
and/or preservation of environment and/or relief of poor, as defined in the
Income Tax Act, 1961.
Education is defined as education in a formal school
or college registered with the Government only,
and excludes vocational training, coaching in arts or sport, etc. Medical
relief is defined as medical treatment and medicines only, and excludes
awareness, prevention, insurance and other activities. Preservation of the
environment is defined as watershed work, conservation of forests, tree
plantation and protection of wild life only, and excludes any other
understanding of preservation...
Relief of the poor' encompasses a wide range of objects for the welfare of the
economically and socially disadvantaged or needy. It will, therefore, include
within its ambit purposes such as relief to destitute, orphans or the
handicapped, disadvantaged women or children, small and marginal farmers,
indigent artisans or senior citizens in need of aid.
Set
your IGC fundraising target as 80% of unrestricted funds spent by your
organisation on the above purposes between April and August 2011. This will
help you to satisfy the condition of providing a Report, that
shows that the funds were used only for the above, to claim disbursement of
funds from GiveIndia for the funds raised through IGC. The first such report
can be submitted by Nov 30th, 2011. Thereafter you can submit
reports every month for a minimum of Rs50,000, till you claim all the funds you
raised through IGC. Any unclaimed funds as of March, 2011 would be disbursed by
GiveIndia to other NGOs meeting the criteria.
Read
the undertaking,
the requirements and checklist of documents for IGC (provided below) to verify your eligibility
beforestarting the application process.
When should you
register for IGC 2011
IMMEDIATELY! Yes, depending on how ready your
documents are, you may take 2 to 5 days to complete your registration. If you register
early, you would be in a position to maximise fundraising between Sep 6 and Oct 20, 2011 when the India Giving Challenge is open.
